Democracy Vouchers
Seattle, WA. The city funded a democracy voucher program for ten years, where voters and some eligible non-registered voters, can contribute vouchers to help fund their preferred candidates’ campaigns if those individuals are participating in the program.
Dark Money Disclosure
Tempe, AZ. The city overwhelmingly voted to require dark money groups spending money in local elections to disclose their original source donors.
Expanding Diversity in Democratic Representation
Washington DC. The city created a public financing 5:1 matching program to help increase the diversity of the candidate pool and council representation, as well as reduce the influence of monied interest and increase the voice and influence of DC residents in local and at-large races.
Establishing the Right to Vote for All Residents Regardless of Status
Mount Rainier, MD. The city expanded the franchise to undocumented immigrants, who are frequently left out of official democratic processes, to vote in municipal elections.
Protecting Historically Black Neighborhoods During Development
Gainesville, FL. The city proposed a one-year building moratorium in a rapidly developing, historically Black neighborhood to slow down the pace of development while the city develops a new Comprehensive Plan that would strategically direct future development.
Universal Access to Legal Defense
Hennepin County, MN. The county established and funded a program to ensure universal access to legal representation for immigrants needing counsel.
Opioid Crisis Response and Harm Reduction
Cuyahoga County, OH. The county used federal funds from an opioid lawsuit settlement to fund some promising harm-reduction efforts that center directly impacted individuals.
Worker Safety Standard Enforcement Policies
Nationwide. Examples of how any level of government can contract with worker organizations to conduct outreach and community education regarding municipal labor standards laws, and to refer cases to the offices of labor enforcement.
Creating Safe Communities for Immigrants
Santa Clara County, CA. The county passed and upheld the country’s strongest sanctuary law to protect immigrants from deportation.
A Local Green New Deal
Los Angeles, CA. The city updated its Sustainable City pLAn in 2019 with a commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement; a responsibility to deliver environmental justice and equity through an inclusive economy; a commitment to expand the green economy; and a resolve to demonstrate the “art of the possible” to drive change.
A Public Health Centered Equity Agenda
Albany, NY. The city passed an ordinance that addresses systemic racism and calls for a reallocation of resources to traditionally underserved communities; the city auditor will conduct a performance audit of the city’s implementation of the legislation.
Left Behind Workers Fund
Denver, CO. The city collaborated with area nonprofits and philanthropy to create an emergency cash assistance program for left-behind workers during the pandemic.
