Values-Based Food Procurement
New Haven, CT. The city used its food procurement policy to take important steps towards addressing climate change at the local level.
Building People Power Through a Community Benefits Agreement
Nashville, TN. Community leaders backed the city in an effort to establish a robust community benefits agreement as part of a stadium construction project.
Renter Protection Package
St. Paul, MN. passed a groundbreaking tenant protection package. The policies include just cause policies that specify reasons why a landlord may evict a tenant, a security deposit limit, tenant screening guidelines, tenant rights and responsibilities information, and advance notice of sale.
Minority and Women-Owned Businesses and Enterprises
DeSoto, TX. The city laid out new commitments to increase women and minority-owned businesses’ participation in city contracting and ability to secure those RFPs.
Homelessness Gross Receipts Tax
San Francisco, CA. The city’s Proposition C implemented a 0.5 percent gross receipts tax on companies that make more than $50 million a year to fund the city’s homeless relief efforts.
Removing Armed Officers from Traffic Enforcement
Los Angeles, CA. The city is exploring ways to remove law enforcement from traffic enforcement responsibilities and find alternative strategies.
Guaranteed Income
Stockton, CA. The city conducted a two-year pilot to increase economic stability by providing a monthly stipend of $500 for a group of residents in the city through a monthly stipend of $500; a group of social scientists documented the impacts of the regular guaranteed income to be published in the future.
Building a Collaborative Ecosystem for Worker Cooperatives
Madison, WI. The city committed $3.2 million dollars over five years to support worker cooperative development. The initiative represents a long-term vision for creating quality and sustainable jobs, contributing to a healthy economy in Madison.
JumpStart the Local Economy
Seattle, WA. The city passed a business tax on top earners to help close budget deficits from COVID-19 and ensure ongoing funding for efforts to create more affordable housing in the city.
Fighting the Privatization of Public School Buildings
Prince George’s County, MD. PG County Public Schools will utilize a controversial, and potentially detrimental, funding structure to finance new elementary school construction over the next four years, the first in the country to do so.

Baltimore, MD. A policy that requires training for all agencies in the science and symptomatology of trauma and how to respond.
Protecting Essential Workers
Philadelphia, PA. In response to COVID-19, the city passed legislation to protect essential workers from retaliation for reporting unsafe working conditions or refusing to work in environments that put their health at risk.
Closing the Digital Divide with 5G
San Jose, CA. The city established a Digital Inclusion Fund to increase digital access for low-income households as part of an agreement with wireless providers for 5G installation.
A New Equitable Business Model for the Restaurant Industry
Boston, MA. In response to the Covid-19 crisis, the city of Boston established a three-part recovery fund totaling $6.3 million. This was part of a larger $15 million effort to support small businesses during the pandemic.
Transforming Local Budgets
Austin, TX. The city council took steps to reimagine public safety by divesting $40 million from the police department and reinvesting those funds in community safety programs including mental health first response and community medics, violence prevention, workforce development, and jobs programs, and substance abuse programs.
Centering Equity and Inclusion in City Planning
Minneapolis, MN. The city passed a Comprehensive Plan and a 3-year planning process that centered community engagement with the intent of creating a long-term plan to address historic inequities in the city through housing, transit, and sustainability efforts.
Closing the Workhouse
St. Louis, MO. Local activists have pushed for the closure of the city’s medium-security prison, known as “The Workhouse.” After several years of public pressure, the campaign adjusted its strategy to focus on defunding the Workhouse through the budget process.
Establishing a Minimum Pay Standard for For-Hire Drivers
New York, NY. The city passed a pay standard act that raised freelance drivers’ wage to $17.22 an hour based on utilization rates that allow it to avoid being classified as a minimum wage.
